Foreward : It is always difficult to assemble a comprehensive literature of anything, especially the world literature. Thus we are all grateful to Ms. Beatrix Gurssgen who compiled such a literature of the comparative anatomy of Indian and African elephants in her doctoral thesis. But, this is difficult to access as well, as it is an “Inaugural Dissertation” of the Veterinary School in Hannover, Germany (1988). In order to improve ease of access to the valuable information to be found in this bibliography, we are reproducing it here. For citation purposes the correct title is:

In this dissertation an attempt has been made to facilitate the search for specific facts of anatomy in African and Indian elephants for practicing veterinary surgeons, and others interested in the anatomy of the elephant by gathering and assessing the available literature on the subject.

The most important differences in macroscopic structure between African and Indian elephants are elucidated in the text, which is divided according to parts of the body: skin, head, body including organs, limbs and tail; thus making the literature appropriate to each part easier to find.

The results of muscles and vessels of the various parts of the body are presented in tabular form, so that the varied views of the authors are more clearly seen. In the discussion, the different assertions of the authors are juxtaposed for comparison and attention is drawn to contradictory findings.

A further bibliography of works relevant to the study of elephants is given in the appendix. It contains papers about elephants, which were found after the dissertation has already been complied, in summer 1987. Due to this they were not analyzed in this dissertation.
